For his script for the 1987 film Moonstruck, John Patrick Shanley won the Oscar for best original screenplay. More recently he directed his own screenplay for the critically-acclaimed, Doubt, in 2008, adapted from his own play of the same name. Three plays will be presented - two short pieces from his Welcome to the Moon collection - the titular piece and The Red Coat, directed by Micha Sparrow - and perhaps his most famous stage work, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea , directed by Adam Harris. The plays take an uncompromising and unflinching look at honestly-drawn, poignant and often lonely characters in New York City.

Tickets are now available at all URBTIX outlets. URBTIX outlets include the Hong Kong Arts Centre, Hong Kong City Hall, Sheung Wan Civic Centre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre (TST) and all Tom Lee music stores.

Parts Available

VICE PRINCIPAL DOUGLAS PANCH

The Vice Principal should be a very good improv actor; singing is very minimal but the comic timing is essential as he does a lot of adlibs.

(Male, 30-40, Baritone): After five years absence from the Bee, Panch is back as word pronouncer and judge. The "incident" at the 20th Annual Bee is almost totally forgotten and he is in a good place now, thanks to a high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis. He is infatuated with Rona. Good improvisational skills required. Audition Piece: THE RULES.

Download the Audition sheet music here.

WILLIAM BARFEE

A heavy set, sloppy character who eventually wins the contest.Singing does not have to be excellent but he needs to move well on stage.

(Male, 18-30, Baritone, character age 12): A Finalist last year, but eliminated because of health reasons (someone put peanuts in the brownies). His famous "Magic Foot" method of spelling had boosted him to spelling glory, and even if he only has one working nostril, a touchy personality, a severe peanut allergy, and the mistaken belief that he looks good in shorts. Socially awkward and indignant.

Audition Piece: MAGIC FOOT.

Download the Audition sheet music here.

MITCH MAHONEY

The ex-con comfort counselor. I was hoping to find an African-American who can sing a gospel type of song. He will be doing many other characters though and so we need someone who can act as well. If we cannot find a black guy, a thug type of guy would be a good concept too. I picture him in a leather jacket and torn jeans so like a biker type of guy would work.

(Male, 20-40, Tenor): The Official Comfort Counselor, Mitch is doing his community service with the Bee, and he might find he has the knacks for hugs and handing out juice boxes. Audition Piece: PRAYER OF THE COMFORT COUNSELOR.

Be familiar with the I LOVE YOU SONG.

Performances in June 2010.

Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers' angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show's Tony Award-winning** creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.
