A Little Christmas Greeting from ACT

cid:image001.jpg@01C962A3.B69A5A10

2008… What a year it has been!

No matter what was happening around the world, ACT consistently gave audiences a wonderful and entertaining relief through the theatre experience. We got your toes tapping and your voices singing along to the revival of Broadway Express; we brought you to tears with the Pulitzer-winning play, ’Night, Mother; and we brought you to hysterics during the sold-out performances of comedy improv challenges with ImprOlympics.

ACT thanks you all

for making 2008 another fabulous year for theatre in Hong Kong. We are committed to bringing even more exciting theatre experiences for all in 2009. Cheers to another ACTion-packed year.

The cast of Broadway Express will perform a two act show: Act 1 is a Broadway tribute revue while the critically acclaimed Act 2 is a parody of Broadway and West End productions. If you missed the original run in 2006, this cabaret show is a parody sending up Musical Theatre of all kinds. Productions ranging from The Wizard of Oz and Sound of Music to Miss Saigon and Momma Mia!, are hilariously re-envisioned in ways you have not seen before.

Since reviving both shows in 2006 as an evening of Musical Theatre experience, the American Community Theater has performed to very enthusiastic audiences at the Fringe Club, the Wanchai Music Festival, the Changing Young Lives Gala Ball, as well as a 13,000-strong crowd at the Asia World Arena.

If you love musicals, but can also see the unintentionally funny side of them, this show is for you.

THE REVIEWS: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. This eloquent, enthralling and ultimately shattering play explores the final hour in the life of a young woman who has decided that life is no longer worth living. "…honest, uncompromising, lucid, penetrating, well-written, dramatic, and…un-manipulatively moving…" —NY Magazine. "…a shattering evening…" —NY Times.

THE STORY: The scene is the living room/kitchen of a small house on an isolated country road, which is shared by Jessie and her mother. Jessie's father is dead; her loveless marriage ended in divorce; her absent son is a petty thief and ne'er-do-well; her last job didn't work out and, in general, her life is stale and unprofitable. As the play begins Jessie asks for her father's service revolver and calmly announces that she intends to kill herself. At first her mother refuses to take her seriously, but as Jessie sets about tidying the house and making lists of things to be looked after, her sense of desperate helplessness begins to build. In the end, with the inexorability of genuine tragedy, she can only stand by, stunned and unbelieving, as Jessie quietly closes and locks her bedroom door and ends her profound unhappiness in one fatal, stunning and deeply disturbing moment—a moment never to be forgotten by those who have witnessed, and come to
understand, her plight.
