A new comedy play by Sarah Ruhl

Directed by Ahmed El-Alfy

A fanciful but compassionate consideration of the treatment, and the mistreatment, of women in the late 19th century, this spirited and stimulating (sorry) new comedy from one of America's brightest young playwrights Sarah Ruhl.

The play is set in a spa town in the vicinity of the United States in the late 1800s. Electricity has just begun to spread its mysterious glow in the homes of the well-to-do. It has recently been installed in the parlor of Dr. and Mrs. Givings, and more significantly in the room next door, the doctor・s :operating theater,; where he practices gynecology and the treatment of :hysteria; using that strange electric-powered box.

Comical though the play・s depiction of Dr. Givings・s methods might seem, it is based on historical fact. The use of primitive vibrators to treat women suffering from a variety of psychological ailments referred to as hysteria is well documented. But Ms. Ruhl・s play is hardly intended as an elaborate dirty joke at the expense of the medical profession. Her real subject is the fundamental absence of sympathy and understanding between women and the men whose rules they had to live by for so long, and the suspicion and fear surrounding female sexuality and even female fertility.

Thank you for your invaluable support over our 2010 season!

Be it through your participation, your audience or even your warm wishes, ACT has been able to stage 3 plays and 1 musical for the local community over the past 9 months, all of which were Hong Kong premieres, all of which launched a new generation of hot new talent among the theatre circuit and all of which generated glowing feedback and reviews.

For his script for the 1987 film Moonstruck, John Patrick Shanley won the Oscar for best original screenplay. More recently he directed his own screenplay for the critically-acclaimed, Doubt, in 2008, adapted from his own play of the same name. Three plays will be presented - two short pieces from his Welcome to the Moon collection - the titular piece and The Red Coat, directed by Micha Sparrow - and perhaps his most famous stage work, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea , directed by Adam Harris. The plays take an uncompromising and unflinching look at honestly-drawn, poignant and often lonely characters in New York City.

Tickets are now available at all URBTIX outlets. URBTIX outlets include the Hong Kong Arts Centre, Hong Kong City Hall, Sheung Wan Civic Centre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre (TST) and all Tom Lee music stores.

Parts Available

VICE PRINCIPAL DOUGLAS PANCH

The Vice Principal should be a very good improv actor; singing is very minimal but the comic timing is essential as he does a lot of adlibs.

(Male, 30-40, Baritone): After five years absence from the Bee, Panch is back as word pronouncer and judge. The "incident" at the 20th Annual Bee is almost totally forgotten and he is in a good place now, thanks to a high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis. He is infatuated with Rona. Good improvisational skills required. Audition Piece: THE RULES.

Download the Audition sheet music here.

WILLIAM BARFEE

A heavy set, sloppy character who eventually wins the contest.Singing does not have to be excellent but he needs to move well on stage.

(Male, 18-30, Baritone, character age 12): A Finalist last year, but eliminated because of health reasons (someone put peanuts in the brownies). His famous "Magic Foot" method of spelling had boosted him to spelling glory, and even if he only has one working nostril, a touchy personality, a severe peanut allergy, and the mistaken belief that he looks good in shorts. Socially awkward and indignant.

Audition Piece: MAGIC FOOT.

Download the Audition sheet music here.

MITCH MAHONEY

The ex-con comfort counselor. I was hoping to find an African-American who can sing a gospel type of song. He will be doing many other characters though and so we need someone who can act as well. If we cannot find a black guy, a thug type of guy would be a good concept too. I picture him in a leather jacket and torn jeans so like a biker type of guy would work.

(Male, 20-40, Tenor): The Official Comfort Counselor, Mitch is doing his community service with the Bee, and he might find he has the knacks for hugs and handing out juice boxes. Audition Piece: PRAYER OF THE COMFORT COUNSELOR.

Be familiar with the I LOVE YOU SONG.

Performances in June 2010.

Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers' angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show's Tony Award-winning** creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

Here is a sneak peek at ACT・s upcoming audition!

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

The HK Premiere of the 2005 Tony Award-winning musical comedy

Directed by Allan Nazareno

Assistant Director Pauline O・Hagan

Musical Direction by Scott Gibson

Produced by Carly Dorfman, Eric Ng and Jenny Lun

Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers' angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show's Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

Auditions end of March 2010.

Performances in June 2010.
